Taqwa, and Abu Bakr's advice

** bold texts are excerpt from Risalah al- Mustarshidin written by al-Muhasibi

What is Taqwa?

Constantly be dutiful (to constantly have Taqwa) to Allah because a Muslim is he whose tongue and hands other Muslims are safe, and a believer is he who people are secure from his evil.

Taqwa was explained as a shield between a person and Allah's wrath. and the component of this shield is iman, ibadah and good behavior. in a person, like a tree, he should has strong root (Taqwa) to be able to produce fruits (Akhlaq').

what is your idea of Taqwa? I have always heard that, loosely translated, Taqwa means fear of Allah. which is true. we should fear Him, so that we will leave all prohibitions.

let's look at this from a different angle.

say, if you fear someone, do you respect them? some of you may say yes, and some no. some people do not truly respect those they fear. they just pretend they do, for whatever reason they choose to do so.

if you love someone, do you respect them? i am pretty sure most of us will say yes. oui?

thus, maybe we could apply it this way. say you love your mother. you do not want to cause her anger and grief. you love her and have all the respect in the world for her. you will try to make her happy by doing all the things she loves and avoid all she does not.

maybe, taqwa can be applied in this sense? at least i do see taqwa from this angle. i love Allah so much, i do not want to cause His anger and wrath on me, thus i avoid all He forbids. and to please Him, i try my best to enjoin in all that is good and encouraged.

so, i ask, what is your idea of Taqwa?

another important point from Brother Suhaib (in his explanation of the bold text above)

a Muslim should always protect another Muslim from two things; his own hand and tongue.

oh brothers and sisters of faith. can we try our best to do this? i am afraid that we are slurring each other more than we care to count. and for what reason? just to see the fall of our own brethren. a hadith from the Prophet;

None of you truly believes unless he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.Do not envy one another; do not inflate prices one to another; do not hate one another; do not turn away from one another; do not undercut one another, but be you, oh servants of Allah, brothers.
A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim: he neither oppresses him nor does he fail, he neither lies to him nor does he hold him in contempt. Piety is right here -- and he pointed to his breast three times. It is evil enough for a man to hold his brother Muslim in contempt. The whole of a Muslim for another Muslim is inviolable: his blood, his property, and his honor.

(note: Imam Suhaib stated that we harm people more using our tongue and hand)

-------

Abu Bakr said, 'Fear Allah with His obedience. Obey him by fearing him. Keep your hands from the blood of Muslims, your stomach from their wealth and your tongue from their honor. And call yourself to account (muhasabah) at every thought.'

Ibn Qayyim al Jawzziyah r.a. said;

Sins start with a thought. Repel bad thoughts, because if you don't, it become desire. Declare jihad on the bad desire. If you don't it become aspirations, goals and objectives. If you still don't repel them, it become actions. And if you don't stop these actions, it become a habit. And then, to stop it will be very hard.

Imam al-Ghazali once said; 'Zina starts with your thoughts, not your eyes.'

here we can see the danger of thoughts. there is a famous saying that goes like this; 'thoughts are nothing if you don't work on them.'

as a Muslim, we have been constantly advised to purify our thoughts. I believe that somebody told me, for every good thought we have in our mind, we are granted with reward from God. as for the bad thoughts, we will not be punished for it unless we act on it. aren't we the luckiest people on earth?!

only God knows how some thoughts just crossed our mind without we intending it. (eh?)

the ethics of ilm'

it is a good reminder to oneself that everytime before preparing to receive new knowledge, to be reminded that the source of knowldege is Allah, and only Allah. He created every single thing in this universe, and thus only the creator holds the ultimate knowledge of His creations.

it is also reminded that, knowledge, once received, should be preserved by the receiver.

in Surah Az-Zumar (The Troops) verse 9, Allah said;

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Say: "Are those who know equal to those who know not'' It is only men of understanding who will remember.

this verse highlighted the difference between the man of knowledge and the one who do not have knowledge.

one of my personal favorite about what The Imam said was about how the fishes in the sea are always praying for those with knowledge, for the man of knowledge will know how to treat his surroundings (environment) properly.

the Imam also mentioned, the way you treat your environment, reflects your relationship with Allah.

as a student of knowledge, we should always put our effort to seek knowledge from a master (teacher), not from Syeikh Google. a teacher who pass the knowledge down to you not only pass the contents, but also the way (akhlaq and 'adab) you are supposed to treat the knowledge. this is something you don't get when your knowledge is coming from online sources. the evidence is clear. we can see how knowledge are treated with disrespect nowadays.

the Quality of a student of knowledge

1. to be sincere when seeking knowledge.
2. to set the intention right, to learn for the sake of Allah.
3. to practice what you have learn
4. to show humility.

The Prophet (s.a.w) once said; 'the knowledge is a secret between the servant and Allah. whoever broadcast it, let him go to hell'

(it should be noted that the hadith above is a da'eef)

in this age when information is available just a click away, we should be careful with the type of information we are receiving.

the Imam also mentioned about the paying zakat (alm) for the knowledge you received. in this case, the alm will be to practice the knowledge. we are also advised to make sunnah prayer before and after receiving knowledge.

It was narrated that the Prophet s.a.w become more and more generous after being visited by the angel Jibrail a.s.

explanation: Jibrail a.s visits the Prophet with the purpose of giving him the wahyu' from Allah. thus, what was demonstrated here is that we should be kinder to people around us when we have more knowledge. knowledge is suppose to make us wiser and thus we should act more kinder to everyone else. knowledge certainly raises you in your darjat, but always stay humble! for arrogance is a trait of the fallen kind.

a Muslim should also always remember, that every good deed that he does, it is a reflection of the Prophet's s.a.w personality. subhanallah!

thus, think twice before doing anything, one Muslim act reflects another. do we want to potray our Prophet incorrectly when he was the greatest man who had ever walked upon this earth?!

the mukhayyam chapter

finally! i found some free time to jot down something serious on my recent mukhayyam in sungai lui, hulu langat. i'm planning to be absolutely brief about it...well, we'll see..

the plan was to depart from al-hidayah surau, mmu after the maghrib prayer, supposedly sometime after 8pm. however, we left mmu around 10pm due to the late arrival of our transportation.

fast forward to where the mukhayyam took place, as we reached there, we were told to climb up to reach our actual destination. it wasn't much a hike, but for a late night walk, the path up there was all muddy, watery and sloppy.

this venue of our mukhayyam is an absolute beauty of Allah creation, it is a beautiful place which is breezy, peaceful, with a spectacular scenery.

on the first day we were there, there was a congregation dhuha prayer that morning. it was an extraordinary feeling to be able to pray in the beautiful weather, in the middle of nowhere, facing towards the west, to where the rest of our Muslims brethren face 5 times each day, remembered how i felt prostrating before Al-Wadud, the closest feeling to God i had ever felt. the wind was perfect, the timing was perfect, all those trees seems to be prostrating with us that morning. masha-Allah. it was once in a life time experience.

some important highlights on what were said on the event.

-muslims in mmu are small in number, muslims who are actually doing da'wah are even smaller.
-the inside story on surah as-saff
-a dai'e MUST be optimistic always. ^^
-see your weak point before pointing out others'
-akhlak, akhlak, akhlak (take care,improve)
-increase self knowledge in every aspect, especially about islam

there you go, my brief rantings on the lovely weekends in sungai lui. (minus the mosquitoes)

Ramadhan Mubarak

Alhamdullilah, Ramadan is finally here again. I hope this Ramadan will bring 101 goodness into all of our lives. This Ramadan feels a whole lot different from my previous one. My first Ramadan away from home, my first Ramadan of which I shall celebrate and enjoy with my friends. Insha Allah. May this month bring all of us to do more good deeds, to bring ourselves closer to our Lord, the Creator of every single dust in this universe. Ameen~~

Quote

Holy Quran
{Surah At-Taubah (The Repentence) verse 129}

"But if they turn away, Say: "Allah sufficed me: there is no god but He: On Him is my trust,- He the Lord of the Throne (of Glory) Supreme!"

this particular verse is one of my favorite from the Holy Quran. How did I came across this particular verse? Well, I was reading Rashad Khalifa's paper on his work about intricate numerical pattern in the text of the Quran involving the number 19. He claimed that this verse and the one before it (Surah At-Taubah verse 128) are fabricated as it does not rhyme with the frequency patterns of multiples of 19. He quoted a hadith in which Ali was feeling restless and disappointed knowing that someone had alter the content of the Quran when the work of compiling it were being done.

now, i don't know if he was right or not, but this particular verse is beautiful and i simply love it. God suffice me. and, i know my friend Tiffany loves it more than me.

Radicals strike again.

This particular post was inspired from a 'The Star' reader who sms-ed his view about the recent Syariah High Court decision to allow a convert to renounce Islam and revert to her original faith. What exactly sparks my interest was his comment that reads :

"Rapists, robbers, assailants gets jail sentences but wanting 2 revert back 2 own religion can get death? Abdul Hakim Othman, do u even know what u saying?"

Source : The Star

Read what he is referring to here.

So, who is Abdul Hakim Othman, and what was his rights to says that
Siti Fatimah Tan Abdullah should be punished with death when she never ever practised this faith in the first place? It was an absurd idea, because all this happens when a Muslim chose to put hadith before the Holy Quran.

Now, if you are a Muslim and you are reading this, and you think I'm kuffar because I don't believe 100% in hadith, can you actually quote any verses from the Quran that tell us Muslims to kill any apostate? Just because they no longer have faith in Islam? The answer is : None.

In the Quran, it has been clearly mentioned over 90 times that there is no compulsion in this religion. Yes, Islam fully endorsed the freedom of religion.

Surah al-Baqarah, 2:256, Allah explicitly states: "Let there be no compulsion in religion". This Medinan verse was revealed when some Companions asked the Prophet for permission to compel their relatives to profess Islam. It has been widely interpreted to mean that no one can be compelled to embrace Islam because religion depends upon faith and will, and this would be meaningless if induced by force. Islam itself means submission to the will of God; and the willing submission of the self to faith and belief must be attained through conviction and reason, not through coercion and duress. (Source)

But, of course, radicals like Abdul Hakim Othman will prefer a weak hadith with only one single isnad (
one chain of transmission or narration)
to Allah Almighty words. Astaghfirullah.

The particular hadith Abdul Hakim Othman mentioned on their website :

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 260:
Narrated Ikrima:

Ali burnt some people and this news reached Ibn 'Abbas, who said, "Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as the Prophet said, 'Don't punish (anybody) with Allah's Punishment.' No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.'
  • First, this hadith is considered a weak hadith with just a single isnad (this means there is only one chain of transmission or narration) and thus according to the rules of Islamic jurisprudence, it is not enough to validate the death penalty.
  • Second, this hadith is also considered a general ('amm) hadith in that it is in need of specification (takhsis); for it would otherwise convey a meaning that is not within its purpose. The obvious reading of the hadith would, for example, make liable the death punishment on a Hindu or Christian who converts to Islam. This is obviously not the intention of the hadith. According to the rules of Islamic jurisprudence, when a text is interpreted once, it becomes open to further interpretation and specification. Therefore, many scholars interpret this hadith to apply only to cases of high treason (hirabah), which means declaring war against Islam, the Prophet, or God or the legitimate leadership of the ummah.
  • Third, and most importantly, there is no evidence to show that Prophet Muhammad saw or his Companions ever compelled anyone to embrace Islam, nor did they sentence anyone to death solely for renunciation of the faith.
Based on these three reasons and the Qur'anic principle of freedom of religion, prominent ulama (scholars) from the seventh to the twentieth centuries have come out with the position that there can be no death penalty for apostasy. According to Professor Hashim Kamali in his award-winning book, Freedom of Expression in Islam, two leading jurists of the generation succeeding the Companions, Ibrahim al-Naka'I and Sufyan al-Thawri, both held that the apostate should be re-invited to Islam, but should never be condemned to death. The renowned Hanafi jurist, Shams al-Din al-Sarakhsi wrote that even though renunciation of faith is the greatest of offences, it is a matter between man and his Creator, and its punishment is postponed to the Day of Judgement. The Maliki jurist Abul Walid al-Baji and the renowned Hanbali jurist Ibn Taymiyyah have both held that apostasy is a sin which carries no hadd punishment.

In modern times, the celebrated Sheikh of al-Azhar University, the late Mahmud Shaltut who was esteemed for his vast knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and Qur'anic interpretation, wrote that many ulama are in agreement that hudud cannot be established by a solitary hadith and that unbelief by itself does not call for the death penalty. The current Sheikh of al-Azhar, who was Egypt's former Grand Mufti, Dr Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, also declared that apostasy is not a capital crime.

Many scholars, including Ibn Taymiyyah, Shaltut and Tantawi, said that the death penalty was not meant to apply to a simple change of faith, but to hirabah, that is, when apostasy is accompanied by rebellion against the community and its legitimate leadership.

Answering Christianity.

So, my only advice to those who think this particular decision is threatening and insulting to the Muslim community, please think again and read the Quran carefully. For Allah is the Al-Hakim who we should fear. (When you disobey His commands)

The Movie Fitna is Fitna

First, I think Wilders was unaware of the actual meaning of Fitna when he entitled his short documentary Fitna. Irony, I think.

Second, why Muslims are(we will always be) pissed at him, simply because he was telling only part of the story.

Here are the verses from the Quran that he included on the film and our reasoning to why Wilders is bullshitting.

First Quran verse presented in the movie:

Holy Quran 8:60
"Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know. Whatever ye shall spend in the cause of Allah, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly. "

But Geert refuses to read and quote just the next verse without understanding context, showing his ill intentions. Courage is being brought into hearts of fearful muslims against whom war has been declared and peace has been taken away:

Holy Quran 8:61
But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in Allah: for He is One that heareth and knoweth (all things).

Islam encourages peace, will somebody want a better proof than this. Even against those who started to go against peace, you also get ready to respond to maintain peace, fighting those who distroy peace, but if they go back to peace, then there is no reason for war.

A little earlier in the same chapter the context becomes even more clear:

Holy Quran: 8:39
And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do.

Permission is being given to fight those who cause tumult or oppression without letting justice and forcing people not to choose what religion is right for them.

Holy Quran 8:58
If thou fearest treachery from any group, throw back (their covenant) to them, (so as to be) on equal terms: for Allah loveth not the treacherous.

It is all about terms and conditions. "IF". Permission is being given to fight with given circumstances of treachery from hostile group.

Same chapter again, to make context even more clear:

Holy Quran 8:56
They are those with whom thou didst make a covenant, but they break their covenant every time, and they have not the fear (of Allah).

"Those" are the people who break agreements and treaties.

More in the same chapter:

Holy Quran 8:49
"Lo! the hypocrites say, and those in whose hearts is a disease: "These people,- their religion has misled them." But if any trust in Allah, behold! Allah is Exalted in might, Wise."

The second verse from Quran presented is:

Holy Quran 4:56
Those who reject our Signs, We shall soon cast into the Fire: as often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for fresh skins, that they may taste the penalty: for Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.

These are the warnings for disbelievers. And there is sign of God in it for the wise. Can an illiterate man (Mohammad, p.b.u.h) who didn't know how to read and write say such a thing which only MD's of today's medical sciences are able to explain.

Today science has discovered that the only place where pain of fire is felt is not the meat, but it is skin. God is giving His sign for the wise people in it to know the Quran is from God only. Punishment through roasting the skin, again and again, only the skin. Still there are many like Geert who did not think about it. For sure there are many signs for believers in Quran.

The third verse quoted is:

Holy Quran: 47:4
Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost.

Again same chapter explains the context:

Holy Quran 47:20
Those who believe say, "Why is not a sura sent down (for us)?" But when a sura of basic or categorical meaning is revealed, and fighting is mentioned therein, thou wilt see those in whose hearts is a disease looking at thee with a look of one in swoon at the approach of death. But more fitting for them-

Chapters 25-78 were revealed during the early stage of Madani life after migration, at the time when muslims were weak, and feared to participate in wars staged on them by disbelievers.

Fourth time a verse is mentioned:

Holy Quran 4:89
They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks;-

Geert again ignores the context from the same chapter, a few verses away:

Holy Quran 4:75
And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)?- Men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help!"

Islam is all about self defence, getting people (men, women, children) their right away from oppression, ill treatment, who cry and ask God for help.

And the final Verse quoted in the movie:

Holy Quran 8:39
And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do.

Geert picks the right verse that explains the whole context, but verily,

Holy Quran 47:24
Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up by them?

Holy Quran 2:171
The example of such disbelievers is that of parrots who repeat what they hear of sounds and calls, without understanding. deaf, dumb, and blind; they cannot understand.

Again it says that if they cease to fight, don't fight. And permission is given to fight until all oppression is nullified, and people have the freedom to choose the right religion and faith as they want.

Islam strictly condemns religious extremism and the use of violence against innocent lives.

There is no justification in Islam for extremism or terrorism. Targeting civilians’ life and property through suicide bombings or any other method of attack is haram – or forbidden - and those who commit these barbaric acts are criminals, not “martyrs.”

The Qur’an, Islam’s revealed text, states: "Whoever kills a person [unjustly]…it is as though he has killed all mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved all mankind."

Holy Qur’an 5:32

Prophet Muhammad said there is no excuse for committing unjust acts: "Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well, and that if they do wrong you will do wrong to them. Instead, accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do wrong (even) if they do evil." (Al-Tirmidhi)

The Holy Prophet Muhammad(s) puts it in these words: "All creatures are like a family of God: and he loves the most those who are the most beneficent to His family. (Narrated by Anas. Mishkat al-Masabih, 3:1392.)

Even duty of prophet was to clearly defined as to convey the message of God to human beings:
So if they dispute with you (Muhammad SAW) say: "I have submitted myself to Allah (in Islam), and (so have) those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and to those who are illiterates (Arab pagans): "Do you (also) submit yourselves (to Allah in Islam)?" If they do, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message; and Allah is All-Seer of (His ) slaves. (Holy Quran 3:20)

Then, if they turn away, your duty (O Muhammad SAW) is only to convey (the Message) in a clear way(Holy Quran 16:82)

Holy Quran 2:256
There is no compulsion in religion.
